Sycamore Hosts Memorial Tournament in Honor of Former Wrestler

On January 15, 2022, the Sycamore High wrestling team hosted the Ariel Rojas-Avila Memorial Tournament.


Ariel Rojas-Avila was a 2021 Sycamore graduate and wrestler who passed away suddenly on December 17, 2021, at the age of 18.


Prior to the start of the tournament, Ariel's parents were presented with the 2021 team photo along with their son's wrestling banner that hung in the school's gym during his senior year of high school.


A total of 16 teams competed for both individual and team awards in the tournament.

Sycamore finished in first place as a team with 211.5 team points.


Sycamore placers on the day were Preston Castleberry - 3rd place - 113lbs, Trey Moreland - 3rd place - 120lbs, Dylan Davenport - 2nd place - 126lbs, Gavin Smith - 3rd place - 132lbs, James Vaughn - 4th place - 132lbs, Luke London - 2nd place - 138lbs, Dalen Kimble - 1st place - 145lbs, Timothy Allen - 4th place - 145lbs, Faisal Al-Ipyden - 4th place - 152lbs, Logan Heckert - 1st place - 160lbs, Nate Thorbjornsen - 3rd place - 170lbs, and Nathan Heathman - 4th place - 195lbs.


Sycamore wrestlers that competed and did not place but contributed to the overall team points were; Saif Al-lpyden, Noah Peppard, Ayden Dowlen, Joseph Allen, Zach Wright, and Evan Dixon.


Best Match of the Tournament was awarded to Luke London for his final match against Tyson Wolcott of Friendship Christian.


The tournament's Outstanding Wrester Award was presented to Logan Heckert.
