On January 8, 2026, Sycamore High School hosted the Annual Battle of the County wrestling event, a tri-match designed to determine the strongest team in Cheatham County. Cheatham County Central High School’s Cubs entered the competition as the reigning champions, having won the title for the previous two years and aiming to secure a third consecutive victory.
This year’s tri-match differed from past events, as it was held during the regular school day. The event was coordinated by the county's athletic director, Jeff Hobbs, who organized the daytime schedule with the goal of exposing more students to the sport of wrestling. By holding the event during school hours, Hobbs hoped students who had never wrestled would have the opportunity to see their peers compete, spark interest in the sport, and encourage school spirit through student support.
The first match of the day featured Harpeth taking on Sycamore. Sycamore opened strong with back-to-back pins in the 113- and 120-pound weight classes, but Harpeth responded decisively, ultimately defeating Sycamore by a final score of 54–18.
In the second match, Harpeth faced Cheatham County Central. Once again, the Cubs started strong with back-to-back pins at 113 and 120 pounds. Harpeth answered with a pin at 126 pounds before Cheatham regained momentum with pins at 132 and 138 pounds. Harpeth fought back with a pin at 144 pounds and major victories (winning the match by more than 8 points) at 150 and 157 pounds. Cheatham claimed a major victory at 165 pounds, followed by a Harpeth pin at 175 pounds and a major victory at 190 pounds. Despite the back-and-forth scoring, Cheatham County Central secured the win with a final score of 46–31, bolstered by pins and forfeits in the 215-, 285-, and 106-pound weight classes.
The third and final match of the day featured Cheatham County Central against Sycamore. Cheatham left no doubt in its defense of the Battle of the County title, defeating Sycamore by a decisive score of 75–6 and securing its third consecutive championship.
