The Cheatham County Lady Cubs and the Sycamore Lady War Eagles hit the hardwoods again on Monday, February 27, 2023. The two teams from Cheatham County traveled to Fairview High School to face their respective matchups in the Region 5 AA Semifinals.

Sycamore, up first, faced the Loretto Lady Mustangs. Senior Kyra Shearon got the momentum going when she opened the floor with back-to-back threes, almost instantly giving the Lady War Eagles a 6-0 lead over the Lady Mustangs. While the Mustangs were able to get within striking distance before the half, a critical turnover right before the buzzer gave Shearon a prime opportunity to sink two, putting Sycamore up by three before heading to the locker room.

Sycamore's biggest lead of the game came in the third quarter, after junior Izzy McPherson was fouled and netted three. However, a series of fouls, turnovers, and missed rebounds allowed Loretto to close the gap a bit, putting them within four to start the final quarter. With most of the fourth quarter spent rotating to respective foul lines, Loretto took advantage of Sycamore's errors and rapidly pulled ahead in the final minutes of regulation play- ultimately sealing the fate for Sycamore's season, beating them 62-51.

McPherson led the War Eagles with 20 points, Shearon finished with 13, and sophomore Anna Knight contributed eight.

In the game to follow, Cheatham faced the Summertown Lady Eagles. Summertown came out strong, not allowing Cheatham to properly gain their footing in the first half. After the halftime break, a recharged Lady Cubs' team came out of the locker room and went to work. In a five minute second-half stretch, Cheatham was able to cut a 17-point deficit to just six. The hard-fought second half was ultimately not enough, though, and the Cubs fell to the Eagles, 67-52, ending their season as well.

Junior Macie Harter led the team with 18; junior Ellie Pardue trailed with 10, and freshman Gracie Weakley had nine.

"I am proud of our team for the way they continued to battle the entire night," says Cheatham Head Coach Jim Gibbs. "It does not surprise me because this is the way our girls have played all season. They have huge heart and determination. Unfortunately, on this hight, they (Summertown) were the better team."

In the championship game on Wednesday evening, Loretto took down Summertown, 60-39.

Sycamore's McPherson and Cheatham's Harter were named to the all-region (5 AA) tournament team.

This year, Sycamore will graduate Kyra Shearon, McKinleigh Young, Bailey Waller, Ashley Vick, and Raegan Hunter. Cheatham will graduate Katelyn Sisco.
