From new rules about backpacks to additional school resource officers, the district is making moves for improved safety
This week, the Cheatham County School District announced new safety measures to be put in place at the start of the upcoming school year.
Beginning in August, middle and high school students will be required to put all backpacks, lunch boxes, and sports bags in their lockers each morning; bags will not be carried from room to room throughout the day. This new safety measure will require students to rent a lock, however, students who qualify for free/reduced meals will not need to pay the rental fee.
"Our schools will also work with students to ensure that they have a locker plan," the district says.
Additionally, the Cheatham County Commission has agreed to fund two additional school resource officer positions that will be filled at the start of the 2023-2024 school year.
"The safety of our students and staff is a top priority, and the Cheatham County School District continues to take steps to ensure that our schools are safe learning environments," the district said in their announcement.
The first day of school for students in grades 1-9 is Monday, Aug. 7 with a 10:45 a.m. dismissal. The first full day of school for students in grades 1-12 is Tuesday, Aug. 8.
