Mary was born on November 9, 1940 in Pleasant View, Tennessee to Phineas and Mabel Head Carney. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, William “Bill” Swaffer and three children, Gary, Ann, and Mark; two granddaughters, Abbie and Ellie. She is also survived by her brother, Jerry Carney and preceded in death by her sister, Vera McNabb.

Mary graduated from Cheatham County Central High School in 1958. She married Bill in 1960 and lived in both Tennessee and Texas during that time. She was a devoted, caring and loving wife and mother who was beloved by family and friends. Mary had a remarkable 25-year career with the State of Tennessee retiring as the Finance Manager with Tennessee Supreme Court. She helped countless people gain employment with the State during her tenure and undoubtedly solved many of the world’s problems with her carpool riders during that time driving to and from Nashville.

Starting at age 4, Mary was an active member of Mallory’s United Methodist Church. She was involved in every facet of the church during her lifetime, especially after returning to Tennessee in 1974. She was a firm believer in doing what’s right and what’s good; to be kind and help others; would rather give than receive. She was so supportive, encouraging and uplifting to everyone she knew. Her light shined very bright and she will be greatly missed by family and friends.

If so desired memorial contributions may be made to Mallory’s Cemetery Fund, 4776 Old Clarksville Pike, Clarksville, Tennessee 37043.
