Lady War Eagles Open Season with Two Wins, One Loss

After a summer of training and adjusting their dynamic after losing two star players, the Sycamore Lady War Eagles served up two wins and one loss during their season-opening week that began on August 19 with a home match against Kirkwood. Sycamore took down the Lady Cobras, three sets to one.


Stat leaders for Sycamore: junior Violet Geldner- 6 aces and 17 assists; junior Lexie West- 4 kills and 12 passes; junior Emma Wayne-19 digs and 12 passes; senior Presley Betts- two blocks.


Junior varsity fell to the Lady Cobras, 1-2, but the freshmen team was able to pull out a 2-0 win.

The following evening, Sycamore played host to the Stewart County Lady Rebels (district), sending them packing after a 3-1 win.

Stat leaders for Sycamore: West- 3 aces, 6 passes, 23 digs, and 1 block; Geldner- 5 aces, 12 assists, and 2 blocks; senior Anna Knight- 7 kills and 10 assists. Senior Chancey Qualls led Sycamore in passes with 34.

"We've got a good group of new and returning players this year, and we have lots of good options to score this season," says Sycamore Head Coach Lea Hunter. "I think we'll be hard to defend against because of that versatility."

On August 22, the Lady War Eagles traveled to Creek Wood for another district matchup, but quickly fell in three sets. The JV ladies were also shut down by the Red Hawks.


Stat leaders for Sycamore: Geldner- 3 aces, 9 assists, and 1 block; Knight- 5 kills and 7 assists. Wayne topped the team in passes with 10, and Qualls led in digs with 7.


"We have improved on serve receive since our first play date, and continued improvement in that area will be really important for us to win district; that's a goal we hope to reach each year," says Hunter. "Of course, we'll have to improve in all areas to reach that mark, but I think our main goal as coaches is to be a good team- one that's unselfish and supportive of each other."
