Cheatham County residents looking to safely dispose of unwanted household chemicals and other hazardous materials will have an opportunity to do so for free this weekend.

The Cheatham County Solid Waste Department will host its annual Household Hazardous Waste Day on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 8 a.m. to noon at Sycamore Square, 350 Frey Street in Ashland City. The free event is sponsored by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.

Residents can bring a variety of household hazardous materials, including household cleaners, pesticides and herbicides, pool chemicals, fluorescent light bulbs, mercury thermometers and thermostats, aerosols, paint thinner, adhesives and a number of automotive products. Needles and sharps will also be accepted as long as they are secured in puncture-proof containers.

Items that will not be accepted include explosives, ammunition, radioactive materials such as smoke detectors, empty containers and most medical or infectious waste. Paint, electronics and automotive oil are also excluded from the state's household hazardous waste collection program.

Residents should transport hazardous materials in sturdy boxes to help prevent spills or cross-contamination and keep the materials away from children and pets while transporting them.

Waste generated by businesses, schools, farms, churches and other non-household sources is handled separately and requires an appointment and disposal fee.

For additional information, residents can contact Cheatham County Solid Waste Director Mike Russell at 615-792-7538.
