Cheatham County is honoring the life and legacy of Arnold “Dutch” Simpkins, a 101-year-old World War II veteran who passed away on October 8, 2025. Mr. Simpkins was the last surviving World War II veteran in Cheatham County, marking the end of an era for the local community.
Born on March 22, 1924, in Ashland City, Tennessee, he was the son of Talmadge Dewitt and Betty Simpkins. Mr. Simpkins proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946 during World War II, where he was stationed in the European Theater. Following his wartime service, he continued to serve his country for another three years in the National Guard.

A man of faith and dedication, Simpkins was a lifelong member of Oakland Free Will Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon for many years. He was also the longest-standing member of VFW Post 6181 and built a long career with Nashville Electric Service, where he worked for 40 years before enjoying 35 years of retirement.
Beyond his service and career, Mr. Simpkins was known for his warmth, humility, and love of family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who enjoyed spending time with loved ones and friends. He especially liked dining at local favorites such as Wendell Smith’s, Riverview Restaurant, and Mission Bar-B-Que.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at Boyd Funeral Home in Ashland City. As a tribute to his life and service, flags across Cheatham County were lowered to half-staff in his honor.
