Melanie and Phillip Ruiz, owners of Viv & Dickey’s, have decided that despite the ongoing pandemic, people still need music.
So, like with any other obstacle thrown their direction, the dedicated pair has figured out a way to take part in Record Store Day 2020 (RSD) which has been rescheduled twice due to COVID-19. This year, RSD will be broken up into three different dates/drops- August 29, September 26, and October 24.
Locally, people can take part in the popular global event at Cheatham County’s only record shop, Viv & Dickey’s, starting at 10 AM.
“We’re making the best of these strange days by bringing people together to celebrate music,” says Phillip. “We see this as a time to offer a brief distraction from this new reality.”
As far as pandemic precautions go, only a limited number of people will be allowed in the shop at a time, and masks will be required to enter. Record Store Day items will be located outside and spaced out accordingly. Face coverings are also encouraged while shopping with the vendors and if people want to gather more closely to talk. etc.
This year’s musical lineup includes Tristan McIntosh, the Howlin’ Brothers, and to close out the night, Towne.
“This year we have also found a way to help artists who have lost their income due to the crisis,” Phillip adds.
Trying something new, the Joelton-based event will host several local artists and vendors who will be selling their unique creations. The list of featured artists includes two Sycamore High School students.
While their storefront is closed until November, customers can still shop live sales that highlight records/tapes/CD’s as well as a wide variety of unique items ranging to vintage knick-knacks from the 1940's to the unique and kitschy items that found their popularity in the 1990s.
