The Cheatham County School District is looking to fill several teaching positions before the academic year begins, but the classroom is not the only place where jobs are available. Bus drivers and nine nutrition workers are also needed, according to Tim Adkins, CCSD Director of Communications.
“We currently need 11 bus drivers and one bus mechanic,” Adkins said. “We do have school nutrition openings at the following schools: ACES, CMS, HHS, HMS, KSES, SHS, SMS, PVES, and ECES,” he said.
As far as teaching positions available, the CCSD website indicates there are still openings for Pre-K, Special Education, and English. Teaching assistants and daycare assistants are also being sought.
Substitute teachers are also in demand. Carly Moore, spokesperson for ESS, which handles substitute staffing for CCSD, said that they do not have a limit on how many substitutes are needed and are taking applications all the time.
“We would like to add at least 100 more for the 2020-2021 school year. We currently have 97 active substitute teachers,” Moore said.
To apply for substitute teaching positions, an applicant must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma. Retired teachers and anyone with teaching certification would be considered for long-term substitute teaching assignments, she said.
“We may experience more long-term substitute teaching assignments than last year due to the coronavirus protocols” which require absences of more than just a few days, Moore said.
Due to COVID-19, both the school system and ESS are using the internet to assist in searches and recruiting. The Tennessee Department of Education has a database which has aided the CCSD in finding teaching professionals. Virtual job fairs have also been key, Adkins said.
