Commission to Vote on Budget, Liquor Referendum at June 29 Meeting


During the June 29 meeting of the Cheatham County Commission, members will be voting on next year’s fiscal budget, which will go into effect on July 1. The new budget has no increase in the property tax or the fire tax for any district across the county, according to County Mayor Kerry McCarver.

If approved, the budget includes a 1.6 % cost of living raise for county employees as well as steps on the current salary pay scale based on seniority, McCarver said.

In addition, the commission will take up consideration of placing a referendum on the November ballot that could allow liquor sales in the county outside city limits, the mayor said. Members of the public are encouraged to let their commissioners know their thoughts on the issue, which had been delayed earlier in the year.

During the Cheatham County Commission’s April 20 meeting via web teleconference, members voted eight to four to defer the vote on the referendum that would put a proposal for liquor-by-the-drink sales in the county before voters in the General Election in November. After much discussion by commissioners, District One Commissioner Gary Binkley proposed the delay until the general public could attend and voice their opinions about the measure.

The commission meeting will take place on Monday, June 29, at the General Sessions Courtroom of the Cheatham County Courthouse. Social distancing guidelines and safety protocols will be in place.
