On May 18, Cheatham County commissioners voted in approval of a resolution to put the school system’s bus garage project out to bid. Commission Chairman Donnie Jordan said this action was to help the commissioners “learn the real numbers for the project.”
According to Tim Adkins, Cheatham County Schools Communication Director, the money for the bus garage is coming from the school district’s education debt service.
“We anticipate that the bus garage will be completed within 12 – 18 months, depending on the bid approvals as well as funding approval by the County Commission,” Adkins said.
The current bus garage is on Thompson Road in Ashland City and is located in a floodplain, so a new location is needed, he said.
As previously reported in The Post, the school bus garage will be built on 57 acres adjacent to school district property in Pleasant View. The land was purchased for $800k in 2019 and will also be used for a new high school.
The school system is still working on plans for the new high school on the same property, Adkins said. “We continue to review the student enrollment numbers. As we build the new bus garage, some of the prep work that will done on the property will allow us to move forward on the new high school as well. We still plan on hosting community meetings in the near future” to gather citizens’ input on the new school, but those meetings have been postponed due to COVID-19, he said.
