In their April 14 meeting conducted via Zoom to protect public health, the Ashland City Council weighed their options for this year’s upcoming Summerfest.
With approximately seven weeks left before the event, currently set for early June, the council discussed various scinarios.
Scott Sampson, the town’s parks and recreation director, recommend canceling the festival.
“I just don’t think we can keep the public safe,” he said.
Minus the small cost of marketing materials, the town would lose no money if they decide to cancel. The only festival-related contract the town has is with the firework company, Sampson said. However, they are willing to put this year’s deposit toward next year’s fest.
After a brief discussion amongst board members and the mayor, the decision was tabled and will be put on the agenda for the council’s next workshop scheduled for May 5.
In the meantime, the amusement vendor, the pyro company, and scheduled entertainment will be consulted.
“Just pray for a miracle,” Mayor Steve Allen said as the meeting was adjourned.
