A veteran-owned and family-operated distillery in Pleasant View is working to help keep folks germ-free during the coronavirus outbreak. Andy Lang, owner of Leatherwood Distillery, said they are busy making their first batch of hand sanitizer and will begin selling 8-ounce, 10-ounce, and one-gallon sizes of the sanitizer starting Saturday, April 11, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
“We’re using the World Health Organization (WHO) formula,” Leatherwood said. “It includes 75% alcohol as well as hydrogen peroxide, and glycerin, which should pretty much kill any germs you might have on your hands,” he said.
Leatherwood said they expect to make about 300 gallons per day at their facility on Highway 41-A. The federal government filed paperwork in March allowing distillers to create hand sanitizer during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to public guidance from the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau’s website.
Walk-in or curbside pick-up is available for the sanitizer, which starts at $5.50 for the 8-ounce size. “We also still have our whiskey, rum, moonshine, and tequila available for purchase,” he said.
The sanitizer can also be found at H.G. Hills in Pleasant View.
Besides helping with prevention of the spread of the coronavirus, customers will also be helping support local business. “It’s great to be part of this community, and we’re glad to be able to convert our facility so quickly and provide something for folks who need it,” Leatherwood said. It took about one week for the distillery team to convert their equipment to produce the sanitizer.
