Flytes Brewhouse, once just a vision of a US Marine veteran and a retired executive banker from the West Coast, is now celebrating its one-year anniversary in Pleasant View.
For owners John and Trish Nelson, the year 2019 proved that taking a leap of faith to pursue a dream can be incredibly rewarding.
“Owning a brewery is hard work, but it’s rewarding to take something you have never done before and make it successful,” says Trish.
Inside the walls of the Nelson’s aviation-themed brewery, customers will find a top-of-the-line tasting room and a vast selection of specialty brews that are certain to appeal to beer lovers of all degrees.
The areas first production brewery boasts a 20-tap lineup made up of unique, hand-crafted brews that can be enjoyed in-house or taken home in crowlers or growlers.
Designed to bring a one-of-a-kind experience to each and every patron, Flytes also offers up unique parties, game nights, live music, and even morning yoga.
John, who has been brewing since 1995, says that his first year in brewery ownership has pushed him outside of his comfort zone which is allowing him to be more creative with his concoctions.
“Talking with people makes me become more creative with brewing. I'm always asking people what flavor profile they want in beer, and then I brew it. I have definitely come out of my brewing comfort zone since we have opened. This week, for example, I will be brewing a new beer—a ginger pale ale,” he says.
Since opening on February 4 of last year, the Nelsons have excelled at creating an environment that continually draws in new patrons and keeps them coming back time and time again.
“I never thought people would love our beers this much,” says John who has already had to upgrade to a larger brewing system.
“We started out with a one barrel (two kegs) system, and now we have a three-and-a half barrel system. We can now produce seven kegs of beer in one batch of brewing instead of just two.”
In addition to helping their patrons nurture their love of beer, John and Trish have also donated nearly $3,000 to both local and global causes dear to their hearts. The American Cancer Society, Pearlie Payne King Mission of Hope, Safe Haven, Music City Greyhound Adoption of Ashland City, and The Greater Good are just a few of the lucky recipients of their generosity.
Heading into their second year, the beer-loving pair hopes to soon be able to offer small bites of food and to get a beer/mug club up and running.
