Donations Needed To Give “Hugs for Cheatham County”

There’s nothing quite like a soft quilt or blanket, especially after a stressful day, and that’s why a local business owner is spearheading a project to create as many new snuggly coverings as possible. Debbie Biersdorfer, owner of Sassey’s Sweet Shop, said the effort, called “Hugs for Cheatham County,” invites local residents to make quilts or blankets and donate them to be used by local law enforcement, fire departments, senior centers, nursing homes, foster care, or “anyone who could use a hug or lap blanket.”

Biersdorfer said churches are also invited to participate. She explained that she had worked on similar projects in years past before she moved to Cheatham County, and they were very successful. “Lots of folks in the community got involved, and it was a good idea. Many of the foster children who received blankets clung to them and felt great security,” Biersdorfer said. Years after the children got the quilts, she said many of the young ones had kept them and treasured them.

Anyone who can sew is welcome to make a quilt or blanket, but if you can’t that’s okay, too. Donations of materials for the coverings are welcome. The coverings need to be 36 inches by 36 inches, Biersdorfer said.

A diaper drive is also part of “Hugs for Cheatham County,” she said. Disposable diapers will be given to local foster children. You can drop off donations – whether they are quilts, blankets, or diapers - at Sassey’s Sweet Shop at 189 Monroe Place, Ashland City, Tenn. If you have any questions, give Biersdorfer a call at 615-815-7894.
