SHS Head Basketball Coach Bids Farewell

After closing out his six year as Sycamore High’s athletic director and boys’ head basketball coach, Toby Miles is bidding farewell to his school family to spend more time with his three young sons who are pursuing their athletic dreams at their schools in Kentucky. Miles said after speaking to his boys, he realized he didn’t want to miss out on their teenage years.

“It’s time for me to see them more and see them growing up,” he explained.”

He won’t be leaving teaching entirely, though. Miles said he has his administration certification and would enjoy being a principal or an assistant principal or something along those lines.

His other boys – his players – were sad to see Miles go, but they understood, he said about sharing the news with them at the close of the school year last month. “They know the love that I have for my boys, and their sadness changed as I talked to them about the changes.”

Miles leaves behind quite an impressive record with his teams, with two of his six years including trips to the district championships, and being number one in the district this year.

Skills on the hardwood aren’t the only thing this coach stresses, though. “A positive mental attitude is important,” he said. “A lot of mistakes happen in the game of basketball and in life, and balance is key. You’ve got to make sure to keep a level head.”
