In just a few short weeks, the new year will offer many of us fresh starts. For John and Trish Nelson, owners of incoming Flytes Brewhouse in Pleasant View, the year 2019 will be the beginning of a dream over two decades in the making.
Recently leaving the West Coast in the rearview mirror and setting their sights on small-town life and brewery ownership, the beer-loving couple is eager to bring a new kind of experience to Cheatham County.
Inside the walls of their aviation-themed brewery located where The Village Primary Care once was at 176 Village Square, Suite 100, customers will find a top-of-the-line tasting room and a vast selection of specialty brews that are certain to appeal to beer lovers of all degrees.
The areas first production brewery, set to open to the public in early January, will boast a 20-tap lineup made up of unique, hand-crafted brews that can be enjoyed in-house or taken home in crowlers or growlers.
Designed to bring a one-of-a-kind experience to each and every patron, Flytes will also offer regular trivia nights, live music, and informative events during which other breweries come to Pleasant View to show off their own flavorful blends.
And for those who are more serious about their suds, Flytes will also offer private club memberships that will grant members access to exclusive quarterly events.
While food is not something customers will see on the Flytes menu, they are encouraged to order-in from one of the many nearby restaurants and enjoy their meal while sipping on a cold one; local menus will be on-hand for convenience.
“I wanted to have a 20-tap brewery where you can have a great beer in an aviation themed environment. Not just our own beers, but also have the best award-winning beers from around the nation—our taps are always rotating to something new. All of this in a relaxing environment where you can meet new and interesting people who love craft beers,” says John.
He began perfecting the art of beer brewing in 1995 while stationed with the US Marine Corps in San Diego.
“I have always had a passion for cooking flavorful food. When I was introduced to the craft beer world, I realized I could make and control the flavors of my own beers. That was it for me. I was hooked,” John adds.
Also adding law enforcement and aircraft fabrication to his resume in his post-military years, brewing had to remain a hobby for John. But he always knew that one day he would turn that pastime into a business he could call his own.
While the Nelsons will have an employee or two to help them out, they plan on tackling most of the work themselves.
A retired executive banker who enjoyed a wildly successful career for many years, Trish is looking forward to her new role as a business owner and watching their brewery dreams pan out.
“We have been fortunate in many ways and have worked very hard in our respective careers in order to make this dream become a reality,” she says with eagerness.
Between the two of them, they have what it takes to get Flytes off the ground and soaring in the new year to come.
With hopes of being open by the New Year, Flytes’ hours will be Monday through Thursday from 2 PM to 10 PM and Friday and Saturday from 2 PM- 11 PM.
