You can save yourself some time when checking those gifts off your list this holiday season, and support a unique local business, all at the same time. Boxaloon, a gift boutique and gift delivery service in downtown Ashland City, held its soft opening on Nov. 18. Owner Kayce Singleton said it’s a way to send your special one a great gift that’s presented beautifully. “In addition to a great gift, there’s an option to add on an oversized box with your present inside, including a helium balloon that pops out when you open it. Just to add another element of surprise with the delivery of the gift,” Singleton explained.
The East Nashville native and mom of two came up with the concept when she and her husband moved to Cheatham County three years ago. With her circle of friends more spread out geographically, Singleton said she wished she could send gifts to her friends like she would give them if she could see them in person, when all the delivery services she saw mostly focused on food or flowers.
“I wanted to send something like a pair of earrings, or some comfy socks with that unique personal touch,” she said. Brands offered at Boxaloon are curated and unique, just like the people they are for, and include names like Corkcicle, Acme Baby Co., Karacotta Ceramics, and Nashville-based Tao+Hawk Jewelry.
A graduate of O’More Design and freelance artist, Singleton’s graphic design background and entrepreneurial spirit led to her conception of the idea and logo for Boxaloon. After working on the concept for over a year, she found the perfect spot for her business, the space next door to Norwood’s Jewelry. It’s the former Main Street home of the bookstore owned by John Mayfield, a legendary philanthropist who lost his battle with cancer last year. Singleton said she hopes Mayfield would approve of her creative outlet.
“I didn’t know him, but every time I’d tell someone about the store, they’d light up because he was such a wonderful, giving person,” she said. As an homage to Mayfield, Singleton said library book-themed cards and gifts will be offered at her shop.
Singleton’s family is helping her launch the business, with her mom and cousin assisting in the operations. “I do expect to need more help as more orders come in,” she explained. Especially with the busy holiday season approaching, Singleton is using a heavy social media presence to get the word out, with Instagram stories featuring pictures of all the newest Christmas items. “I’m looking forward to people picking up the phone and calling, saying ‘I need this for my loved one,’” she said.
