AC Woman Charged with Attempted Second Degree Murder in Overdose Incident

Haley Danielle Smith, a 26-year-old resident of Ashland City, was arrested yesterday evening for a drug deal gone wrong.

Authorities were dispatched to Tristar Ashland City Medical Center just before 6:30 PM. The victim, 29-year old William Huff of Clarksville, told investigators that earlier that evening while out with friends, he had received what he thought was cocaine from Smith.

He also stated that he snorted a single “line" immediately after the purchase; the next thing he knew, he was waking up in the emergency room after suffering from a near-fatal heroin overdose.

Smith, who was aprehended later that evening during a traffic stop, stated that she sold what she “thought was cocaine.”

After the drug deal took place, Huff rode in the back seat of his friend’s car as they headed to her house. Upon arrival, she said she found him to be slumped over in the back seat with blue lips and no pulse.

She immediately began CPR, and another friend who was also in the car with them drove to the hospital.

Smith was later apprehended during a traffic stop while in the car with her brother, Zachary Smith. She handed over, without incident, one needle/syringe and one piece of aluminum foil that she said contained heroin.

Additional heroin and paraphernalia was found inside the vehicle.

Deputies took Haley Smith into custody on charges of attempted second degree murder, possession of Schedule I drugs, and possession of paraphernalia.

Zachary Smith was also arrested on charges of driving on a revoked license, possession of Schedule I heroin, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Both Haley and Zachary are being held without bond in the Cheatham County Jail.
