The Grand Marshal for the second annual Cheatham County Veteran’s Day Parade has been announced. Decorated Vietnam veteran and Cheatham County native, Walter Weakley, has been chosen to lead the parade designed to allow the community to honor our nation’s veterans both locally and globally.
Drafted into the Army in September of 1969, Weakley completed basic training at Fort Campbell before being stationed at Fort Story, Virginia. He served one tour in Vietnam with the 589th Engineers from May 1970 to April 1971.
The company deactivated, and SPC-5 Weakley returned home to be honorably discharged. For his service, he received the National Defense Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and Army Accommodation for Meritorious Service Medal.
Upon return home, Weakley married his wife, Joan Scott. Together, they have two children, Dan and Laura, and four grandchildren: Logan, Gracie Belle, Zoe, and Sawyer.
Weakley, current Cheatham County Commissioner representing the 4th District, is a proud member of the American Legion Post 40, Commander of VFW Post 6181, and is the charter president of the Vietnam Veterans Association 1129 Chapter.
The parade will be held downtown Ashland City on Sunday, November 5; lineup begins at Riverbluff Park at 1PM and the parade starts at 2 PM.
