Cheatham Community Invited to Pedal for Pat Summitt Foundation

October 11, 2017

Members of Pat Summitt’s family, along with East Cheatham Elementary School teacher Lacritia Sanson, gather to support the “Healthy Lungs Pedal for Pat Ride,” which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 21 at the Cumberland River Bicentennial Trail in Ashland City.

The Cheatham County community is invited to attend the “Healthy Lungs Pedal for Pat Ride” on Saturday, Oct. 21.

The ride will benefit the Pat Summitt Foundation.

As the all-time winningest coach in NCAA history, Summitt, a 1970 graduate of Cheatham County Central High School, led the University of Tennessee Lady Volunteers basketball team to 1,098 wins. After a five-year battle with Alzheimer’s, Summitt passed away in 2016.

The Pat Summitt Foundation is raising awareness and money to find a cure for the disease.

A team of 12 cyclists are riding 1,098 miles from Oct. 12-27 from Knoxville to Key West, Fla., in hopes of raising donations. Why 1,098 miles? That is how many wins Summitt had as a head coach.

Cheatham County, Summitt’s childhood home, wants to do its part.

The ride is being co-sponsored by the Cheatham County Health Department, Cheatham County School District and Cheatham County Community Enhancement Coalition.

The ride is open to students ages 6-12 and will be held at the Cumberland River Bicentennial Trail on Chapmansboro Road in Ashland City.

The ride for students ages 9-12 will begin at 8 a.m. and ages 6-8 will follow at 8:15 a.m.

Parking is at the Marks Creek Trailhead, and the length of the ride is 3.7 miles in and out (you can turn around at any time).

Students must be accompanied by an adult and all participants must wear a helmet and ride a bike (no strollers or walkers).

Admission is free, but participants must register for the ride. Students that register will receive a free Pedal for Pat T-shirt (while supplies last).
