Cheatham County Named a Healthier Tennessee Community

The Governor’s Foundation for Health and Wellness has announced that Cheatham County has been named a Healthier Tennessee Community.

For achieving the designation, the Cheatham County Community Enhancement Coalition (CCCEC) was awarded a $5,000 grant to help sustain community-wide projects that encourage and enable physical activity, healthy eating and tobacco abstinence.

The grant presentation was made the CCCEC’s monthly meeting on Aug. 28.

“Achieving this designation as a Healthier Tennessee Community was a great team effort. The designation shows that our work building a healthier Cheatham County is showing strong results,” said Laura Durham, CCCEC coordinator.

The Healthier Tennessee Community program takes a community-wide approach to improving Tennesseans’ health by engaging the local leaders of cities, towns, counties and neighborhoods.

In Tennessee, one in five adults smoke, and one in five high school students uses tobacco. Approximately 34 percent of the population is classified as obese and an additional 34 percent are overweight, and type-2 diabetes and high blood pressure are at epidemic levels.

To be designated an official Healthier Tennessee Community, Cheatham County was required to identify wellness champions to lead the initiative that engages people in workplaces, schools and faith organizations, and then work to initiate and sustain community-wide events and activities that support physical activity, healthy eating and tobacco abstinence.

The Governor’s Foundation for Health and Wellness launched the Healthier Tennessee Communities initiative in March 2015.

More information on the program and other Healthier Tennessee initiatives is available at www.healthiertn.com.

The CCCEC meets on the fourth Monday of each month at 6 p.m. at Community Bank & Trust in Ashland City. The meetings are open to the public, and the community is invited to attend.

In addition, the CCCEC recently opened an office at 102 Frey St. in Ashland City (the former Balthrop, Perry, Noe and Newcomb law office).
