The Cheatham County Democratic Party held a “birthday party” on Thursday, August 17 at the Cheatham County Fair. Social Security and Medicare, the organization’s two most historically popular social programs, were celebrated. This year, Social Security turned 82, and Medicare, 52.
The celebration included informative handouts, friendly mingling, and, of course, a birthday cake that honored the Franklin D. Roosevelt and Lyndon B. Johnson administrations.
Members of the Cheatham County Democratic Executive Committee were also onsite to assist fair-goers with voter registration applications and verification; petitions were also made available for interested parties to sign.
“A primary purpose of this celebration was to highlight the benefits Americans have long enjoyed from Social Security's program of retirement insurance (and now other "safety net" benefits and services), and from Medicare's program of health insurance for qualified elderly individuals,” said Mike Lottman, Chair of the Cheatham County’s Democratic Party.
